Health Minister Dr Irving McIntyre says Dominica is approaching 40% vaccination of its eligible population.

His remarks as Dominica on Tuesday April 6, 2021 received 28, 800 doses of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine, manufactured by SK Bioscience of South Korea, under the COVAX Facility.

COVAX is a joint effort between the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), the Vaccine Alliance Gavi, UNICEF, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Dr McIntyre said the vaccine does play a part in the country’s fight against COVID-19.

“We are approaching 40% vaccination of our eligible population…We are about 39 percent, so we basically have another what 32 or something percent 31 percent, so that we can get our herd immunity, which is our target and we really wish we could get there as soon as possible,” he stated.

The Health Minister said with the vaccines, it’s going to make the job much easier, as the rest of the population can get vaccinated.

“But that’s the job of the Government, to make the vaccines available…So it’s all now left to the public to come forward and participate in our vaccine rollout program,” Dr McIntyre added.

He encouraged the public to come forward and join the vaccine rollout program which benefits all in the country.

“We understand people might have their little limitations and their little reservations regarding vaccines, but we have to trust in science, and we’re really asking the public to participate in it,” Dr McIntyre added further.
