Dominica’s ambassador to the Organisation of American States (OAS), His Excellency Steve Ferrol, has assumed the role of Chair of the Permanent Council during a ceremony held at the organisation’s headquarters.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Ferrol presented his work plan for the current quarter, which focuses on strengthening governance and effectiveness within the Permanent Council, as well as enhancing the OAS’s role in hemispheric integration.
The plan aims to bolster the Organisation’s capacity to address the political, economic, social, and security challenges facing the Hemisphere.
It is structured around three main priorities: improving governance and effectiveness through more strategic agendas, enhancing the relevance of the OAS in addressing current challenges, and reinforcing the Organisation’s role in hemispheric integration.
The Chairmanship will also place special emphasis on the needs and perspectives of small states and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). This underscores the principle that integration and cooperation must benefit all countries in the Hemisphere, regardless of their size.
The Permanent Representative of Brazil, Ambassador Benoni Belli, will serve as Vice Chair of the Permanent Council.
The Chair and Vice Chair of the Council rotate every three months among the OAS Member States.
