Dominica has taken a major step towards the construction of a Geothermal Energy Plant.

The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors on Tuesday approved US $27 million dollars towards the construction of a 7 mega watt power plant in Dominica.

The World Bank in a release said Dominica has a small power system which relies heavily on diesel to produce electricity.

The average price of electricity on the island is amongst the highest in the world and customers are exposed to the volatility of international oil prices.

Speaking on Kairi FM’s Heng Program on Tuesday morning, Dominica’s Geothermal Energy Project Coordinator His Excellency Dr Vince Henderson says the funding will go a long way into making the country  more energy efficient.

The Project will be implemented by the Dominica Geothermal Development Company Ltd.

Dr Henderson says the plant will provide about 40 percent of the energy required for consumers.
