Dominica to resume face-to-face classes for some schools in October.

Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Education, Chandler Hyacinth

With the start of the 2021 academic year delayed due to COVID-19 fears, only some schools on island will resume face to face classes on October 4.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Chandler Hyacinth told DBS Talking Point this morning, only 5th formers will be engaged online from September 13 to October 1.

Hyacinth says this will change from October 4, “based on the health conditions around that time”.

The Ministry of Education is proposing a mixed approach to learning, where the type of learning will depend on the size of the school population.

“We have some 42 schools with 120 students or less,” Hyacinth said. “These schools can be engaged using the social distancing protocols… on a full-time, face-to-face situation”.

For larger schools, the Ministry is suggesting a mixture of “Some face-to-face, some rotation, some online”.

Hyacinth assured parents that through this approach, students 9 years and under won’t be “in online mode all the time”.
