Government and Opposition Debate Amendments to Sexual Offenses Act

Minister responsible for Small Business Development, Roslyn Paul is standing behind the amendments to the Sexual Offenses Act being debated in Parliament.

The amendments make provision for stiffer penalties for sexual abuse against minors and the perpetrator in marital rape upon conviction could be sentenced to 14 years in jail among other things.

The amendments also deals with hush money and those who don’t report known cases of child abuse.

But Roseau Central Member of Parliament, Joseph Isaac says he has serious concerns over the section which makes reference to marital rape.

Meantime , Minister for Foreign Affairs Francine Baron says marital rape is unacceptable and the aggrieved party must be protected by the law.
