Officials at the Met office are closely monitoring the progress of hurricane Irma which has rapidly intensified into a category two storm as of 11 this morning.
The storm which is the 9th named storm of the season was a tropical storm only yesterday, now has sustained winds of 100 miles per hour with higher gusts.
As of 11 this morning, the center of Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 16.9 North, longitude 33.8 West.
Irma is moving toward the west-northwest near 10 mph. This general motion is forecast through early Friday, followed by a generally westward motion on Saturday.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 100 mph with higher gusts.
Irma is forecast to become a major hurricane by tonight and is expected to be an extremely dangerous hurricane for
the next several days.
The center of the system is projected to move just northeast of the area by Tuesday into Wednesday of next week.
Interests in Dominica are advised to monitor the progress of this system and to make all the necessary preparations as feeder bands from Irma and rough seas could affect the island.
