Obesity and inactivity among key contributing factors to diabetes in Dominica

Consultant Ophthalmologist, Dr. Hazel Shillingford-Ricketts says a study highlighting the rate of obesity in Dominica is a cause for concern.

Her Comments as Dominica joins the rest of the world in observing world Diabetes Day on Tuesday.

A recent study shows that 60 percent of women are considered to be overweight, while the same can be said for 3 in every 10 men.

World Diabetes day is being observed under the theme “Women and diabetes our right to a healthy future”.

She says the decrease in the consumption of fruits and vegetables among Dominicans is another troubling area.

Dr. Shillingford- Ricketts says diet and exercise are key to combating diabetes.
