Sammy Praises Hetmyer’s Consistency in New Batting Role

West Indies Head Coach, Darren Sammy is hoping Shimron Hetmyer can maintain consistency in his new role, batting number three.

The Guyanese enjoyed a good series outing against South Africa batting in the number three position. He finished as the top scorer of the series, getting 171 runs and recorded one half century.

Hetmyer scored 48 from 32 in the 1st T20, 75 from 42 in the 2nd, and 48 (not out) from 22 in the 3rd T20.

Over the past few years, the left-hand batsman was predominantly utilized as a finisher, rather than a top order batsman.

The Windies Head Coach says Hetmyer’s new role adds a new dimension to the team’s batting line up ahead of the 2026 ICC T20 Men’s World Cup.

Meanwhile, the West Indies Head Coach adds that he was also pleased to see a return to form by Gudakesh Motie. The left-arm spinner claimed 3-17 in West Windies’ win over South Africa in the 3rd T20I on Saturday in Johannesburg.

Sammy says with the slow pitches at the World Cup, Motie will be a handful for opposition teams.

The West Indies lost the 3-match series 2-1 to South Africa. They now turn their attention to the World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

West Indies will face Afghanistan in their first World Cup warm up match on Wednesday, February 4th. Their first World Cup game is against Scotland on February 7th.
