Five family related Bills were passed in Parliament on Tuesday April 25 and has received support from those working to secure the safety of Dominican children.
They included the Maintenance of Children Bill, Maintenance Bill, Status of Children Bill, Children Care and Adoption Bill and Domestic Violence Bill.
The Children Care and Adoption Bill has been welcomed by the Welfare department and Acting Chief Welfare Officer, Delia Giddens Steadman spoke to DBS News.
Coordinator of the Child Abuse Prevent Unit, Jemma Azille says the new Children Care and Adoption Act represents a progressive move by Dominica and should signal a new day for all Dominican Children.
Azille also welcomed an announcement by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, that the social services department will be restructured.
Meanwhile, Magistrate Gloria Augustus expressed mixed reactions over the passage of the five family related bills.
She says while she welcomes the bills, believes the Child Justice Bill should have been included.
