Dominican farmer Gilles Carbon Jno Baptiste of Capuchin has been recognized among the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) 100 Women Heroes, receiving the award in Rome over the weekend.
The FAO said her selection followed a highly competitive global process that attracted more than 600 nominations from 131 countries.
According to the organisation, Jno Baptiste distinguished herself through her leadership, innovation, dedication and tangible contributions to strengthening agrifood systems and improving the lives of rural communities.
With more than four decades of farming experience, she operates a seven-acre farm producing crops and livestock for the local market. Her agricultural output includes citrus, plantain, avocado, vegetables, potatoes and onions, alongside goats, broilers and layers.
She is also a major supplier of fresh eggs and vegetables to supermarkets and the wider local market.
The FAO said her selection reflects Dominica’s commitment to supporting women as leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, farmers and agents of change in agrifood systems.
Jno Baptiste currently serves as president of the Capuchin Farmers Group.
