New Kalinago Chief Annette Sanford calls for July 4th to be declared a national day dedicated to the Kalinago people

Dominica’s first female Kalinago Chief Annette Sanford has called for a national day dedicated to the Kalinago people.

The former Opposition Senator officially took the oath to be installed as new Kalinago Chief during a ceremony on Wednesday.

Meantime Sanford also called on regional leaders to recognize the indigenous people of the Caribbean.

Parliamentary Representative for the Salybia Constituency Cozier Frederick said it is important that the Government of Dominica and the Kalinago Council continue to work together.

Meantime six other candidates took their oath of office to serve on the Kalinago council for a five-year term.

They are Wayne Rossi from Crayfish River, Francilia Darroux from St. Cyr, Riscia Ellick from Sineku, Kimberly Tyson from St. Cyr, Teddy Thomas from Sineku and Miranda Langlais from Bataca.
